UPDATE: The 2010 Equality Act came into force in October last year and introduced 9 Protected Characteristics which cannot be used as a reason to treat people unfairly. The 9 Protected Characteristics are:

• Pregnancy and maternity
• Race
• Religion and Belief
• Sex
• Sexual Orientation
